A cool air system is a system that draws air into a machine, removes heat, and discharges the air out. Some computer systems use a cool air system to maintain the required operating temperature for components. Typically, a large honeycomb filter will be used to evaporate water to keep the air flowing through the system.
Air cooling is used in many different types of engines. It can be used in smaller engines, such as motorcycles and cars, as well as in larger engines such as aircraft. Usually, it is a simple, inexpensive method of cooling. The system usually includes a blower, a fan, and a thermostat.
An air-cooled engine has a series of fins that extend out from the engine. These fins help direct air into contact with the hot metal, removing the heat. In some cases, an exhaust system is also included in the air-cooled engine. This can also aid in keeping the intake air cool.
Air is then pumped through a fan that is mounted on a main shaft. Depending on the size of the engine, the fan can be either a conventional fan, or a blower. Cool air is then forced out through a belt-mounted duct. Ideally, the fan should be at least three millimetres in diameter. If the engine is small, a flywheel may also be incorporated into the system.

A draft-type system is most often found in motorbikes and some C.I. (Corvair and International) engines. Draft-type systems include baffles and semicircular ducting that direct air over the engine cooling fins. Using the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet, the air flow is forced through the ducting, over the cylinder heads, and through the cylinders.
A blower-type system uses a fan that is surrounded by a metal casing. It can be attached to the main shaft, and is generally suited for small engines. For larger engines, a cooling system must be installed on the suction side of the fan.
Liquid-cooling systems are a more complex process. This involves circulating water around the engine parts that are at a high temperature. Water will evaporate, causing the temperature to drop to a few degrees below ambient. However, this method will result in a higher risk of corrosion. And it can also cause the engine to boil. Besides, the liquid must be refilled after evaporation.
A vapor-compression phase-change cooler is a more modern alternative. Essentially, it contains a pump and a tube that leads to the processor. After the pump has passed, the vapor passes through the evaporator, and then returns to the cold end of the tube.
Other components of an air-cooled system include filters and controls. Unlike a liquid-cooling system, an air-cooled system does not require a water pump. But, the amount of heat removed is dependent on the surface area of the metal that is in contact with the air.
